Texarkana

We camped at a beautiful park near Texarkana, Texas. Following the recommendation of our hosts at Shady Pines RV Park, we beat the rush for the Friday night catfish special at Redwater Diner by arriving just before 5 p.m. We both had fried catfish and sweet cakes. Mmm mmm. . . a local treat! The parking lot was full when we arrived and cars were lined up to take our spot when we left. The countryside near Texarkana is very pretty, but large parts of older Texarkana have been abandoned. Buildings are empty. Businesses seem to have just up and moved on to the other side of town or they have disappeared altogether.

We didn't venture very far into Arkansas, but we did tour their historic district in downtown Texarkana. We enjoyed very much the automobile museum. Putting your left foot in Texas and your right foot in Arkansas in front of the only federal building to be physically in two states in the United States was unique. We probably could have skipped going through the rooms of an influential family's mansion filled with a mixture of late19th through mid-20th century house furnishings and one woman's vanity display of over 500 pairs of shoes.
